Emmy Noether : the mother of modern algebra

Summary: Born in Germany in 1882, at a time when women were expected to become wives and mothers, Emmy earned a PhD in mathematics in 1907 at the University of Erlangen. She is expecially well-known for her work in the study of algebra, having developed several groundbreaking mathematical concepts over the course of her career. She worked with many influential and outstanding scientists, including Albert Einstein, who called her "the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began." Jewish by birth, Emmy was forced into exile when the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933; she then came to the United Stated and taught female college students at Bryn Mawr College. She died in 1935, leaving behind unparalleled contriubutions to the field of mathematics.
