This colorful book begins with a brief historical look at the challenge of designing and building a submarine before focusing on the Hunley, a sub built by the Confederates during the Civil War. The lively text challenges readers to imagine themselves as members of the crew, and though the danger is made very clear (the Hunley sank three times, twice with no survivors), the cartoon-like drawings of people and their comments in speech balloons and Handy Hint sidebars add light, even comical notes. The final pages take readers aboard a nuclear sub and point out a few basic improvements in submarine technology since the Hunley's day.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2008 Booklist
