Summary: "The Nanwalek and Port Graham Alutiiq of Alaska use many of the plants that grow in their country. They have a rich cultural heritage in which they deserve to have pride. This book contains detailed documentation of their ethnobotanical knowledge. Ethnobotanical information was gathered from 1977 to 1988 through association with the Alutiiq people in interviews, participation in their activities, and from personal observation. Fresh plant specimens were used for identification purposes whenever possible, although dried specimens, photographs, and illustrations were sometimes used to supplement the fresh specimens or when fresh specimens were not available. Most of the information presented here has been passed down orally over many years. The author's hope is that it will reinforce respect for the "old ways" and encourage their continuation." --back cover.
