Bear man of Admiralty Island : a biography of Allen E. Hasselborg / John R. Howe.
As a young man Hasselborg (1876-1956) was lured to Alaska by gold at the beginning of the century. He learned the skills of prospecting, mining, building boats, trapping game, fishing, and homesteading. Above all though he became a bear hunter until his respect for the animals turned him into a conservationist and his commitment led him to learn scientific research. By the middle of the century he guided nature photographers and was on the front line in the battle between the timber industry and conservationists.
