Although National Geographic has produced a children's almanac for many years, this is the first for adult readers. And what an almanac it is, providing short updates on a wide range of scientific, human, historical, and geographical topics. It is not a traditional almanac; it skips statistics and tables in favor of two-page spreads that include images, brief text, and factoids relating to the subject. Entries are grouped into thematic sections, such as ""Life on Earth,"" ""The Science of Us,"" ""Exploration & Adventure,"" and ""Yesterday to Tomorrow."" Each section begins with a quiz (answers are given in the section's text), which is an innovative way of enticing the reader to explore the content. What stands out most is the excellent quality of the images no surprise, considering the publisher. Additionally, the almanac includes a brief world atlas and information on every nation on the globe. This outstanding, boundary-pushing work belongs in every library collection.--David Tyckoson Copyright 2019 Booklist

Dubbed National Geographic's "first-ever" almanac for adults, this title doesn't disappoint. With more than 400 pages and its trademark exceptional photography, the volume rings in 2019 by presenting and answering readers' questions about everything from science and nature to history and geography. The book opens with trending topics including weather extremes, plastic, space travel, gene editing, and developments in urban environments. Topical themes and eye-popping pictures will satisfy trivia buffs, curious questioners, and science nerds alike. Need to know more about homo sapiens? Curious about natural wonders such as manatees and hummingbirds? Want to identify the highest point on Earth? Deepest lake? Wonders in your backyard? Browsable infographics and chapter-leading "quiz master" questions will satisfy. VERDICT A hefty yet thoroughly absorbing reference for most public libraries.--Sharon Verbeten, Brown Cty.
