In 1949, the U.S. Land Office withdrew 17,000 acres of land on the north shore of Kachemak Bay from entry and homesteading. That summer, the Alaska Soil Conservation Service completed a detailed soil survey of the withdrawn area, with particular interest in the feasibility of using the land for agriculture.
