Minimal art / Daniel Marzona, Uta Grosenick (ed.).

Marzona, Daniel. (Added Author). Grosenick, Uta. (Added Author).

Summary:

An everyday fluorescent tube fastened diagonally to the wall; untreated wooden beams or metal plates laid in simple patterns on the floor; boxes made of metal or plexiglass placed in simple arrangements; cubes and other basic geometric forms made of plywood, aluminium or steel - these would be some of the ways to describe the works of numerous artists who were active in New York and Los Angeles in the early 1960's. Characteristic of Minimal Art is the value-free geometric juxtaposition of similar elements. It arose in America largely as a reaction to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. The name 'Minimal Art' is due to the philosopher of Art Richard Wollhein, who was trying in an article to describe the general phenomenon of 20th Century art's minimal 'art' content. Art critics eventually came to apply the term to the works of artists such as Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Morris.
