This browsable, six-chapter reference from Brown, who has a PhD in feline social behavior, gives good overviews of the 10,000-year evolution from wild cats to domesticated breeds and their relationships with humans. The first five chapters address the details of cat evolution, anatomy, social behavior, interactions with people, and modern-day challenges. After a six-page introduction to cat breeding (including its downsides), the final chapter is a directory of over 50 cat breeds: one-page entries featuring a box of information on background, temperament, grooming, health, etc., and a handsome photograph of a breed exemplar. (Brown gives hybrids and moggies, Britishism for non-pedigree cats, their due, too.) Chapters flow easily, with paragraph entries under headings and subheadings. Adding diverting interest, many blue-boxed pop-outs appear throughout the book on topics like cats' third eyelid and their ability to "(almost) always land on their feet"; and every page features a photo, graphic, or both, with informational captions. A glossary of medical terms, bibliography, and index confirm this book's practicality for both cat owners and anyone looking to research our feline friends.
